Memorial Scholarship Fund
The Joe Roth Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in 1977 to help keep the spirit of Joe Roth living forever. The scholarship was considered a meaningful and dignified way to honor Joe's memory. The income generated from the fund gives financial assistance to a deserving junior each season for their senior year. The initial money raised for this fund was from a $1 surcharge on each ticket (50 cents for students) sold for the 1977 (USC) and 1978 (UCLA) Joe Roth Memorial Games. The surcharge created the opportunity for the scholarship fund to be endowed without needing a large commercial fund raising drive.
The first Joe Roth Memorial Game generated approximately 48,000 from ticket sales and the department received other private donations totaling about $42,000. A total of $90,000 was placed in the scholarship fund in the first year.
The scholarship fund still exists today and it provides assistance to several football players each season.
